To hang or to lean: the mirror against the wall
Placing a large mirror directly on the floor, leaning slightly against the wall, is an alternative to hanging, more flexible and often more spectacular. Allow at least 160 to 180 cm in height for the effect to work: below that, the mirror looks like an object placed there by default. The inclination should remain discreet, a maximum of 5 to 10 degrees, otherwise the reflection plunges towards the ceiling and distorts silhouettes. Choose a hard, flat floor: on a thick rug or an irregular parquet floor, the foot sinks on one side and the whole thing starts to lean. An anti-slip pad under the base solves the problem. Non-negotiable safety point: a leaning mirror can easily tip over, so it must be secured to the wall with a strap or bracket as soon as there are children or pets in the house. What weight, what fixing for a large mirror?
A large mirror is heavier than it looks, and the fixing determines its longevity. Glass weighs about 2.5 kg per square meter and per millimeter of thickness: an 80 x 180 cm panel of 4 mm glass already weighs 14 kg, to which are added the frame and the back panel, often 5 to 10 kg more. Therefore, adapt the fixing to the nature of the wall. In a plasterboard partition, standard plastic plugs are to be avoided beyond a few kilograms: switch to metal expansion plugs, or better, aim directly for the studs. In a solid wall, an 8 mm impact anchor is suitable. Always distribute the load over two spaced fixing points rather than a single central hook, and check the level during installation. Allow a safety margin of two to three times the actual weight.
