Frequently asked questions about storage furniture

Which storage furniture for which need?

A sideboard stores crockery near the table, a TV unit keeps the living room organised, a bookcase shows off books and objects, and a chest of drawers dresses the bedroom. Start from what you need to store and the room it is for, then choose open or closed storage.

Open or closed storage: which should I choose?

Closed storage hides clutter and suits everyday items. Open shelving looks lighter and shows off a few favourite pieces. Many units combine the two, with doors below and open compartments above, so you can hide the practical and display the decorative.

How wide should a TV unit be?

Choose a unit at least as wide as the screen, ideally a little wider, for a balanced look. Plan for cable management and a ventilated compartment for the router or set-top box. A low height, below eye level when you are seated, is the most comfortable.

How do I secure a tall bookcase?

A tall bookcase should be fixed to the wall with an anti-tip bracket, especially if there are children in the home. Put the heaviest books at the bottom to lower the centre of gravity. Check that the floor is level and that the unit does not wobble.

Sideboards and TV units

The sideboard gives a dining room structure and stores tableware; the low TV unit keeps cables and devices in order. In solid wood, cane or metal, with solid or glazed doors: horizontal lines that anchor a room.

Bookcases and shelves

Floating wall shelves, modular bookcases, decorative ladder shelves: everything you need to display books and objects without overloading. Light wood and black metal combine for a graphic, light look.

Chests of drawers and additional storage

The chest of drawers stores linen in the bedroom, the console holds keys and post in the hallway. For the containers that go on and inside them, see our storage baskets, and for the hallway our wall hooks and coat racks.

Choosing your storage

Measure the space before buying, and choose a piece slightly lower than the window so as not to block the light. For storage in every room, see also our living room, bedroom and hallway selections.
