The basic rule comes down to two numbers: two brackets are sufficient for lengths up to 80 cm, then an additional support is added every 60 to 80 cm. A 180 cm shelf therefore requires three support points, not two. Thickness is just as important: 18 mm is suitable for light decorations, but aim for 25 to 30 mm as soon as you line up books, which weigh 20 to 25 kg per linear meter. The free overhang beyond the last support should not exceed 10 to 15 cm, otherwise the shelf may bend at the ends.
