To create a warm candlelit atmosphere, play with quantity and height: group three to five candles of different sizes rather than just one, mix candlesticks, votive holders, and lanterns, and arrange them in odd numbers. A low, golden light, lit at dusk, is enough to transform a room into a cozy haven.
Why candles warm a room
A candle flame emits a very low light on the color scale, around 1800 Kelvin, which is warmer and more golden than a warm white bulb at 2700 Kelvin. Placed low, at table height rather than on the ceiling, it casts soft shadows and creates an intimate point of light. It's this contrast with the general lighting, once night falls, that sets the mood.
The rule of odd groups and heights
A single candle lost in the middle of a table rarely makes an impact. Good composition follows a few simple principles:
- Group in odd numbers: three or five pieces compose more naturally than an even number. The eye prefers groups of three or five.
- Vary the heights: a tall candlestick, a low votive holder, an intermediate pillar candle. This relief adds movement.
- Think in triangles: distribute the light points in an imaginary triangle rather than in a line.

The holder contributes as much to the style as the flame. Match its material to your decor:
- Travertine and stone: mineral, matte, warm, very current.
- Textured cement: raw and sculptural, it adds character.
- Blown glass: it diffuses and amplifies the flame's light.
- Black metal and brass: graphic or muted, perfect for striped glass lanterns.
Safety and lifespan
A beautiful ambiance still involves an open flame: a few reflexes are necessary. Never leave a burning candle unattended and keep it away from curtains, throws, and flammable materials. Place it on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Trim the wick to about 5 mm before each lighting for a clean, smokeless flame, and let the wax melt to the edge the first time to prevent tunneling. Extinguish everything before sleeping, and prefer battery-operated LED candles in a child's bedroom or near a curtain.

Soy wax, paraffin, or beeswax: what's the difference?
The wax determines the burn time and how the scent diffuses. Paraffin, derived from petroleum, is the most common and cheapest: it burns quickly and carries the scent strongly. Soy wax, a vegetable wax, melts at a lower temperature and generally burns 30 to 50% longer for the same volume, with a softer and more gradual diffusion. Beeswax is the densest and slowest to burn, with a natural honeyed scent that doesn't blend well with added fragrances: save it for an unscented candle. A useful benchmark for comparison before buying: a 180 to 200 gram vegetable wax candle lasts approximately 35 to 45 hours, compared to 25 to 35 hours for a paraffin candle of the same weight. The burn time is almost always indicated on the label, and it is this, rather than the price, that indicates the true value of a candle. Adjusting scent intensity according to room size
A well-balanced scented candle is barely noticeable when you enter, then gradually settles in. Allow one 180 to 200 gram candle for a 15 to 20 m² room, and two for an open living area of 30 to 40 m², placed at a good distance from each other rather than side-by-side. The rule to avoid missteps: only one scent at a time per open space. Two different scents in the same room will clash and create an overpowering mix. Light the candle 20 to 30 minutes before your guests arrive, allowing the wax pool to form and the scent to diffuse, then let it work.
