The golden rule: go bigger than you think
The most common mistake is a rug that is too small, floating in the middle of the room and fragmenting the floor. A good rug brings seating together into a cohesive whole. The simple rule: it must go at least under the front legs of the sofa and armchairs, to create a true living area rather than an accessory lost in the center.

The size depends on the room's surface area and how you arrange the furniture. These guidelines cover most living rooms:

The three ways to place a rug
Three configurations work, from the most generous to the most space-saving:
- All legs on the rug. Sofa and armchairs entirely on it, with an overhang of 30 to 45 cm around. The most generous solution, ideal in a large living room.
- Front legs only. The rug slides under the front legs of the seating. The most common: it unifies the living area without requiring a huge rug.
- The anchor rug. Smaller, it sits under the coffee table with at least 40 cm clearance all around. Reserved for small living rooms or reading nooks.
Round, rectangular or oval?
The shape follows that of the living area:
- Rectangular: the default choice, which fits a straight sofa and structures an elongated room.
- Round or oval: perfect around a round coffee table, in a reading nook or to soften a very angular room. A round rug of Ø150 to 180 cm is enough to define the space.
- Square: reserved for square rooms or for a small, well-defined island.
What material for a living room rug?
The material affects comfort underfoot as well as maintenance:
- Jute and natural fibers, braided, provide a warm and textured base that goes with everything, and are resistant to traffic.
- Cotton, finer and often washable, is suitable for lively living rooms and graphic patterns.
- Wool and thick weaves offer the greatest softness and good durability.
- A natural hide laid over a large rug adds a soft touch and welcome texture.

The rug pad, the accessory we always forget
A rug placed directly on a smooth floor slides, wrinkles, and wears out faster. A rug pad solves all three problems at once. Choose a thickness of 2 to 5 mm: enough to cushion footsteps and protect the parquet from friction, thin enough not to create a trip hazard at the edge. Cut it 2 to 3 cm smaller than the rug on each side, so that it remains completely invisible. On parquet or laminate flooring, prefer a needle-punched felt or natural latex model, which is more stable over time than cheap PVC grids, which can mark certain varnishes. On carpet, a thin rug pad simply prevents the rug from moving with each step. Maintaining a living room rug year after year
A living room rug endures daily traffic: a few simple steps are enough to keep it clean. Vacuum once or twice a week in the direction of the fibers, without a rotating brush on looped or jute weaves, which fray. Rotate the rug half a turn every six months: wear and fading are distributed instead of marking a single area, especially in front of the sofa and near an exposed window. For a stain, blot immediately with a white cloth, from the edge to the center, without rubbing. Jute and natural fibers do not tolerate large amounts of water: use a barely damp cloth, then dry thoroughly. Wool sheds a little fluff in the first few weeks, which is normal and will stop. Plan for a deep cleaning every two to three years. The same rules apply to a dining room rug, which is more exposed to stains.
