What size ceiling light for your room's surface area?
A well-sized ceiling light illuminates without overpowering the room. Its diameter is primarily chosen based on the floor area:

The available height determines the shape of the ceiling light:
- Low ceiling (less than 2.50 m): prefer a flat model, flush with the ceiling, that only extends a few centimeters.
- Standard height (2.50 to 2.70 m): most ceiling lights are suitable, from LED discs to decorative models.
- High ceiling (more than 2.70 m): a voluminous or slightly suspended ceiling light better fills the space.
Maintain at least 210 cm between the floor and the bottom of the fixture in traffic areas, to avoid bumping into it.
Integrated LED or replaceable bulb: what to choose?
This is the most defining technical choice. Both options are valid, for different uses:

Bathroom: what IP rating for a ceiling light?
In a wet room, the IP (Ingress Protection) rating is not optional. It is read as two digits: the first indicates protection against solid objects, the second against water. Simple guidelines:
- Outside of water zones (away from the shower and bathtub): IP20 minimum, IP44 recommended.
- Above or near the shower and bathtub: IP44 minimum, IP65 for installation directly above.
The same reasoning applies to a kitchen exposed to splashes or a covered outdoor area. If in doubt about the zone concerned, an electrician can confirm it.
Is one ceiling light enough? Complementing it based on the room
A ceiling light provides general illumination, making a room instantly visible. It is sufficient in an entrance, hallway, dressing room, or bathroom. In a living area, it benefits from being complemented by a second, lower and warmer light source (table lamp, floor lamp) to create a true evening ambiance. Then adapt the style to the use:
- Living room: a designer and fairly wide model, supporting an ambient lamp.
- Bedroom: soft light, ideally with a dimmer, to prepare for rest.
- Kitchen and bathroom: clear light and an appropriate IP rating.
- Entrance and hallway: a compact and flat ceiling light, that doesn't hang low.
How many lumens for a ceiling light?
Wattage no longer means much since the advent of LED: it's the luminous flux, expressed in lumens, that you should look for. The benchmark is calculated from the surface area, keeping in mind that a ceiling light only provides general illumination, not all the lighting. Count approximately 100 to 150 lumens per square meter in a living room or bedroom, 150 to 200 in an office, and 250 to 300 in a kitchen or bathroom, where clear vision is needed. A 20 m² living room therefore requires around 2,000 to 3,000 lumens in total, to be distributed between the ceiling light and accent lamps. What to check before ordering
A ceiling light is also chosen based on three technical details that avoid unpleasant surprises on installation day. First, look at the type of attachment: most recent ceilings are equipped with a DCL box with a plug to connect, whereas an older home often requires direct connection to a terminal block and a mounting plate fixed to the ceiling. Then check the announced weight of the fixture: beyond approximately 3 kg, a simple plasterboard attachment is no longer sufficient; suitable anchors or structural fastening are required. Finally, check for dimmer compatibility, which is not automatic for integrated LEDs: the term "dimmable" must be explicitly stated, otherwise the light will flicker or the dimmer will hum.
