Choose a floor lamp to illuminate a volume or a corner without occupying furniture, and a table lamp to provide a low, warm light on a console or a side table. The two are not mutually exclusive: a successful living room often combines a floor lamp in a corner with one or two table lamps.
Two different, non-competing roles
Before choosing, understand that floor lamps and table lamps belong to two distinct layers of light, as explained in our guide on how to properly light every room. The floor lamp illuminates a volume; the table lamp creates a close-up light source. One works with space, the other with intimacy.
The floor lamp: illuminating a volume, dressing a corner
The great advantage of a floor lamp is that it illuminates from above and occupies space without taking up surface area on furniture. Placed in an empty corner, next to a sofa or armchair, it instantly creates a reading nook. It usually measures between 150 to 165 cm high. An adjustable model allows you to direct the beam exactly where you are reading; a tripod base or a colored finish also adds a real decorative presence.

The table lamp: close-up light
A table lamp needs a support: a console, sideboard, side table, or desk. In return, it provides a low, warm light, ideal for evening ambiance, and itself becomes a decorative object. Expect a height of 40 to 60 cm for an accent lamp that dresses a piece of furniture as much as it illuminates it, without dominating the room.

Floor lamp vs. table lamp: a comparison
To quickly decide for your room:
| Criterion | Floor Lamp | Table Lamp |
|---|---|---|
| Placement | On the floor, in a corner | On a free piece of furniture |
| Space occupied | No furniture surface | Requires clear support |
| Type of light | Illuminates a volume, from above | Low, close-up light |
| Flexibility | Rather fixed placement | Easily moved |
| Ideal for | Reading corner, small living room with limited space | Evening ambiance, dressing a console |
The verdict: often both
The truth is, a well-designed living room usually combines a floor lamp in a corner with one or two table lamps on furniture. It's this multiplication of soft light sources that creates depth and warmth, whereas a single light flattens everything. If you're still undecided for your living room, our guide details how to choose a floor lamp for your living room.
Fenalor's tip: In a small space with no free furniture surface, start with a floor lamp. It provides the most light for the least clutter, and you can add a table lamp later.
Actual footprint and the outlet issue
The debate often comes down to a tape measure. A straight floor lamp occupies a base 25 to 35 cm in diameter, but a tripod model requires 40 to 50 cm on the floor once the legs are spread, and an arc lamp can have an overhang of up to 80 cm above the seating area. A table lamp, however, only needs 25 to 35 cm of free surface, provided that surface exists: a side table, console, or sideboard already occupied by objects can be the real sticking point. Then comes the connection. Both types offer cables of about 150 to 200 cm, which leaves little leeway: locate your outlets before choosing, because a beautiful floor lamp condemned to be three meters from the only available outlet will end up connected by an extension cord across a walkway. If no configuration works, a wall light often solves the problem.
With children or pets, which to prioritize?
The question of stability completely changes the arbitration. A tall, light floor lamp can easily tip over with the push of a child or a passing dog: if you install one, look for a solid, weighted base of at least 4 kg, or a tripod model with a wide stance, and avoid high-traffic areas. The table lamp seems safer, but it can travel at the end of its cable if pulled: place it set back from the edge of the furniture and run the cord down the back. In both cases, no cable should cross a traffic area. The most serene solution is often to mount the light on the wall, out of reach, or to choose a cordless rechargeable lamp that can be moved freely: our guide details which wall light to choose and where to place it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Floor lamp or table lamp for a small living room?
In a small living room where furniture is already occupied, a floor lamp is often the best choice: it illuminates from above without taking up surface area. A table lamp remains interesting if you have a console or side table to decorate.
What height for a living room floor lamp?
Most floor lamps measure between 150 and 165 cm. Next to a reading armchair, choose a model whose bottom of the lampshade is slightly above your shoulder when seated, to illuminate the page without glare.
Can a floor lamp and a table lamp be combined?
Yes, and it is even recommended. A floor lamp in a corner for volume, one or two table lamps on furniture for ambiance: these sources complement each other and create layered light, much warmer than a single point of light.
Which bulb to choose for these luminaires?
For a living room, stick to warm light around 2700 kelvins, regardless of the source. Check the socket type indicated on the product sheet, often E27 or E14: the bulb is not always included, which allows you to choose the power and hue.
