For a dining table, allow about 60 cm of width per guest, ideally 70 cm for more comfort. A rectangular table measuring 120 x 80 cm seats 4 people, 160 to 180 cm for 6, and 200 to 220 cm for 8. Allow 90 cm of clearance around the table to pull chairs back.
The basic rule: 60 cm per guest
Table comfort is simple to calculate. Each guest needs about 60 cm of width for their place setting, 70 cm to be truly comfortable, and a depth of 40 cm in front of them. On a rectangular table, a width of 80 to 90 cm leaves a central aisle for dishes, carafes, and candle holders. Below 80 cm, the space between guests becomes cramped once the table is set.
Rectangular table: what size for how many?
This is the most common shape, ideal for large gatherings and elongated rooms. These dimensions account for one place setting per person, plus space for dishes in the center:
| Guests | Length | Width |
|---|---|---|
| 4 people | 120 cm | 80 cm |
| 6 people | 160 to 180 cm | 90 cm |
| 8 people | 200 to 220 cm | 90 to 100 cm |
| 10 people | 240 to 280 cm | 100 cm |
Tip for frequent entertaining: an extension table allows you to go from 6 to 8 or 10 place settings without cluttering the room daily.
Round or oval table: what size for how many?
A round table brings guests closer and fits well in a square room or a small space. Beyond 6 people, an oval table takes over to avoid becoming too wide:
| Guests | Round (diameter) | Oval |
|---|---|---|
| 4 people | Ø90 to 110 cm | 150 x 90 cm |
| 6 people | Ø120 to 140 cm | 180 x 100 cm |
| 8 people | Ø150 cm and up | 220 x 100 cm |
Round or rectangular, each shape has its advantages depending on the room: we compare them in detail in our guide round or rectangular table.
Don't forget the clearance around
A well-sized table is useless if you can't sit comfortably. Keep at least 90 cm between the edge of the table and the wall or a piece of furniture: this is the necessary space to pull back a chair and stand up. Allow 100 to 120 cm if people also need to circulate behind seated guests. If you place a rug under the table, make sure it's large enough so that the chairs remain on it even when pulled back: we give the correct dimensions in our guide on dining room rugs. Finally, consider lighting: a well-placed pendant light completes the scene, as we explain in our guide on the height of a pendant light above a table.
Fenalor's tip: Before buying, outline the table dimensions on the floor with adhesive tape and place a chair. You can quickly check the actual clearance and avoid a table that's too big for the room.
Table height and chair height: the gap to respect
The size of the tabletop isn't everything: the harmony between the table and seating determines actual comfort. A standard dining table is 74 to 76 cm high, and a dining chair has a seat between 45 and 47 cm. The gap between the seat and the underside of the tabletop should remain between 27 and 30 cm: less, and your thighs will be cramped; more, and you'll be eating with your chin on the plate. Also check the thickness of the tabletop and the presence of an apron or stretcher under the table, which reduces this clearance accordingly. If you choose armchairs, measure their total height: beyond 65 cm, they won't fit under the tabletop and the chairs won't be able to be pushed in. For a high table or bar, at 90 or 110 cm, you'll need stools with seats of 65 or 80 cm.
The base changes the actual number of seats
Two tables of the same dimensions don't necessarily accommodate the same number of guests: it all depends on what's underneath. A central base, star-shaped or column-shaped, completely frees up the edges and often allows for an extra place at each end of a rectangular table, or for squeezing six people around a 120 cm round table. Conversely, four legs planted at the corners block the end seats, and an A-shaped or trestle base, which is very wide on the floor, can bother guests seated at the ends. Finally, check the spacing between the legs: it should be greater than the width of two chairs side-by-side, or about 100 to 110 cm, so that people can sit between them. We revisit these trade-offs in our guide on how to choose dining room chairs.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size table for 6 people?
A rectangular table 160 to 180 cm long by 90 cm wide comfortably seats 6 guests. For a round version, allow a diameter of 120 to 140 cm, and for an oval, about 180 x 100 cm. Always allow 90 cm of clearance around for the chairs.
How many centimeters per person at the table?
Allow about 60 cm of width per guest, and 70 cm for true comfort. Add a depth of 40 cm in front of each for the plate and glasses. On a rectangular table, a width of 80 to 90 cm leaves space for dishes in the center.
What size table for 8 people?
Aim for a rectangular table 200 to 220 cm long by 90 to 100 cm wide for 8 guests. An oval table of 220 x 100 cm offers the same number of seats while softening the corners. An extension table is ideal if large gatherings are only occasional.
How much space should be planned around a dining table?
Leave at least 90 cm between the edge of the table and the walls or furniture, to pull back a chair and stand up without obstruction. Increase this clearance to 100 or 120 cm if people need to circulate behind seated guests.
