Frequently asked questions about floor lamps

Where should I place a floor lamp in a living room?

A floor lamp sits well in a corner to spread ambient light, or next to an armchair for reading. Beside a sofa, it gives light without taking up any surface, unlike a table lamp, which needs something to stand on.

What is the difference between an ambient floor lamp and a reading lamp?

An ambient floor lamp spreads a broad, soft light, often towards the ceiling, to fill the room. A reading lamp directs a precise beam towards an armchair or a reading corner. Some models combine both functions on a single stand.

Is a floor lamp enough to light a room?

It complements the lighting rather than replacing it. Combined with a ceiling light and a table lamp, it adds the layer of ambient light that makes a living room cosy. On its own, it creates a lovely pool of light but leaves some areas in shadow.

How tall should a reading floor lamp be?

To read comfortably, the light source should sit above your shoulder when you are seated, often between 120 and 150 cm. An adjustable head lets you aim the beam at your book without lighting the whole living room.

Reading floor lamps

Articulated arm, adjustable head, directed light: some floor lamps are designed for reading. Paired with an armchair, they create the ideal reading nook.
