This two-tone piece works exactly like a black plinth under a light object: the dark part recedes, and what you see from above is a ring of light wood that appears to float. Viewed from the side, the piece reverts to a simple black pebble. Two interpretations, depending on the angle of the table.

What you need to know to install and maintain it:

• Remove the wax as soon as it is cold, lifting it outwards from the varnished housing
• The natural wood crown absorbs wax, the varnished housing does not
• Never put water on the crown; it would swell and crack the adjacent stain
